Today, I suggest we visit one of my favorite cities in Nicaragua, the city of León, located about two hours north of Managua and one hour north of El Tránsito.
León is an essential stop on your Alternative Nica itinerary. It's a vibrant, young, and dynamic city. Less touristy than Granada in the south, León offers a glimpse into the local atmosphere.
It took me a while to appreciate this city. I had to take the time to get to know it. I've been there many times in the last two years and each time I discover new surprises.
During my last visit, I discovered a magnificent art gallery in León, the most beautiful I've had the chance to visit so far in the country. This is the Ortiz Gurdián Foundation.

Presentation of the Foundation and Mission
The Fundación Ortiz Gurdián is a non-profit institution founded in 1996 by Nicaraguan entrepreneurs and art collectors Patricia Gurdián de Ortiz and Ramiro Ortiz Mayorga.
The foundation's main objective is to promote cultural development in the country and make it accessible to as many people as possible. The foundation extends its activities beyond the arts, as it also manages a health program ( Programa de Salud ), created in 2003, focused on the diagnosis and early treatment of breast cancer.

The León Art Centre: An Architectural Treasure
The gallery is located right in the city center, but few hotels or hostels advertise it. That's probably why I've always missed it.
However, the Lonely Planet guide considers the foundation to be: "Probably the finest museum of contemporary art in all of Central America."

The Art Gallery is truly unique. As you will see, it comprises six historic houses, typical of León's colonial and traditional architecture, built between the 18th and 19th centuries. These residences are presented as a reflection of the city's most authentic architecture, with spacious hallways, living rooms, and interior gardens.
The ceiling heights are impressive, and the woodwork, columns, and masonry are remarkable. Admiring these six houses alone makes it well worth the trip.
Collections and Exhibitions
The León Art Centre houses numerous art collections. You can discover temporary and permanent exhibitions there. The foundation also provides publications to explore and document the works on display.
I was truly surprised by the diversity of the art movements on display. I must admit, I have very little art knowledge, but I was able to admire sculpture, painting, and projections. Among the various movements, you'll find modern and contemporary art. A large part of the collection at the first house highlights Central American artists. But you'll also find works by Andy Warhol, various modern American artists, and even a poem by Paul Éluard! Clearly, the French are everywhere across the globe. Among the works presented, I also spotted some big names such as Picasso, Chagall, and Miró.
Conclusion
I hope this short article has inspired you to visit this magnificent art gallery. After several years in Nicaragua, it's one of my most delightful surprises. León is an ideal city for a break between exploring the south of the country and visiting the reserves in the northeast. With this gallery and a few great restaurant recommendations, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time in León.

See you soon in the magnificent city of León!
